Slab building extraordinarily tall vases

I was able to tape another session with Ken Jacobsen at the Visual ARTS center. Today is the third shoot of the slab building process he uses for his tall vases. A single vase can take around 20 hours to construct. Ken has developed a unique set of techniques. By shooting a little footage each day during the creation of one vase I hope to show how amazing this process is.

I had fun shooting video of Jon Lovejoy at his home studio and his class at the VAC. Raku is video friendly. The finishing movement in raku, American -style raku, is a “reduction process” involving glowing hot pots, garbage cans and roaring paper fires.
